Sure, I'm a homeschooling SAHM of dd7 and dd1.5, wife to dh=hotness. Sure, I wake up to leaky diapers and spend my days picking up toys and feeding kids. Sure, I write about my kid's development and quick make-up fixes, but I'm so much more than that, too.
It's kinda like that age-old debate between working moms and stay-at-home moms (okay... not age-old, but at least since the 60's... and isn't that forever ago?). There's the issue of whether or not a daycare should raise your kids and whether it's too mind numbing to be engaged with 2 year olds all day. But in the end, the SAHM is honestly frustrated because the working mom tells her that she's "just" a mom.
So, I read recently that to blog well, you need to have an identity, to pick your niche so to speak. It's talked about all over that people need to know what to expect from you, that you need to target an audience that wants what you're going to consistently give them.
So be it.
But this one's not gonna do it. Cause I while I may have some child-rearing experiences I want to share, I'm just as likely to tell about struggling to love hateful people, or considering my own pleasure to be a means of pain for others. I'm just as likely to write about my awesome apartment, as I am to review a book for church leaders.
But either way, I'm not just a stay at home mom, and I'm not a mommy blogger. So, sorry if you were looking for something predictable. But I just don't do niches.

YES!
ReplyDeleteI am with you...
I think the "find a theme" advice is complete garbage...
Well....I'm not sure I'd call it "garbage" (look at me being all diplomatic and stuff!)
ReplyDeleteIt works for people... I've read blogs that are all about the mom thing. They have tons of readers. So, it's working.
But that's just not me. I have a hard time confining myself to one aspect of who I am.
And ultimately, the blog is my journal, so it doesn't really matter that much about the audience. Although it is way more fun when people comment.
*raising my cup o' coffee* Here Here! Friend I never had!
ReplyDeleteWhile my "web-presence" states Hip Mama...and I am sure others would say I am just another "mommy" blog...I have a lot more depth to me than "just" another anythng... I guess that's what keeps me HIP MAMA and not just....Mama
Hip Mama
I have no niche. I want to be able to blog about whatever I'm thinking about. I blog a lot about books, but my blog is not a book blog. I blog about God, but my blog is not a Godblog. I can't offer consistency in subject matter to my readers, I can only offer myself.
ReplyDeleteI always feel irritated with mom's who say they lost their identity when they had kids. What, do your kids eat your sense of humor, your intellect, your drive to learn more? I know we all go through that 'transition' time when the first baby comes along, but I never feel lacking in anyways because I am a SAHM. Cheers to not being 'just' a mom!
ReplyDeletei pretty much just call myself a personal blogger. It encompasses everything i blog about. Most of it is about David, but there are some posts that aren't about him. (right? now i can't think of any.)
ReplyDeleteAnyway, good for you for sticking up for your personal identity!
You are a weird-o ;) Just kidding. So what kid of blog is this? A bloggy blog (YO!)?
